PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a sealing material from peeling, while suppressing display uneveness caused by film thickness of a film formed on a substrate. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal apparatus D has a first substrate 10 and a second substrate 20, laminated via a frame type sealing material 30. An overcoat layer 13 is formed on the surface of the first substrate 10, facing the second substrate 20. The peripheral edge 131 of the overcoat layer 13 is at a position farther outside than the inner peripheral edge 302 of the sealing material 30. The sealing material 30 has a first portion 31 placed on the surface of the overcoat layer 13 and a second portion 32, in contact with the surface of the first substrate 10 in an exposed region Ae, where overcoat layer 13 is not formed.
