PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of keeping comfortableness at the time of image reading operation by preventing light radiated from a light source provided in the image reader from being leaked to the outside. SOLUTION: In the image reader, a light shielding wall 101 surrounding the outer periphery of an original platen 2 on which an original is placed is provided in a scanner frame 2 being the outer frame of the original platen 2. The image reader is equipped with a switching mechanism for switching the light shielding wall 101 to a state where it is housed in the scanner frame and the other state (state where it surrounds the outer periphery of the original platen 2) interlocked with the displacement of an original mat memberα2 with which the original platen 2 is covered.
