PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the reductions of the luminescence life-time and the luminance of a luminescence layer, by so changing the luminescence region of the luminescence layer as not to limit its luminescence region to any specific region, when alternately applying to the luminescence layer forward and backward biases having different voltage-polarities from each other. SOLUTION: An organic EL device having at least a luminescence layer 60 between an anode 23 and a cathode 50 opposed to the anode 23 has an anode buffering layer 70 between the anode and the luminescence layer, and has a cathode buffering layer 52 between the cathode and the luminescence layer. The anode buffering layer and the cathode buffering layer are made of respective conducting materials. The hole mobility and the electron mobility of the luminescence layer are made different from each other, so that its luminescence is obtained always in either one of forward and backward biases, when alternately applying to it the voltages having different polarities from each other.
