PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate in a large volume only a negative ion which does not contain ozone or the like and is safe for a living body without generating toxic substances such as ozone and a nitrogen oxide. SOLUTION: The negative ion generator is constructed of a positive electrode 16 which has a single circular aperture and made of a conductive polymer material having an electric resistance of 10<SP>9</SP>-10<SP>12</SP>Ωor a ceramic material, a metallic negative electrode 14 which has a needle and is arranged so that the tip of the needle may be opposed to the circular aperture of the positive electrode, and a voltage impressing device which impresses a DC high voltage between the negative electrode and the positive electrode, and generates negative ions by corona discharge between the negative electrode and the positive electrode.
