PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external preparation which is used for skin and improves a skin symptom, to provide a method for improving a skin symptom, to provide a method for diagnosing a skin symptom, and to provide a method for screening a galectin-7 expression-promoting substance effective for improving a skin symptom. SOLUTION: This external preparation for the skin contains an ingredient for increasing the content of galectin-7 in the skin, as an active ingredient. The galectin-7 itself, and a mixture of the galectin-7 with a galectin-7 expression-promoting substance having an action for increasing the expression of the galectin-7 in skin by contact with the skin are especially used. The external preparation for skin is coated on the skin to improve the skin symptom. The content of the galactin-7 in the skin is measured to diagnose the extent of the skin symptom. In addition, the content of the galectin-7 after the contact of a selection candidate substance with the skin is compared with the content of the galectin-7 in the skin before the contact to judge whether the increase in the content of the galectin-7 is significant or not.
