PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serpentine lamp used as a backlight. SOLUTION: The serpentine lamp comprises an electrode fitted to the side face of a plate, a conduit which is installed to the plate by being bent and folded in multiplex and has the inner peripheral part covered by a fluorescent material and filled with a discharge gas, and an insulator which has gap between the electrode and the bending portion of the conduit adjacent to the electrode. The electrode and the conduit are insulated by an insulator, and thereby interference by a voltage phase difference becomes minimum. Thermal conduction from the electrode is suppressed in order to prevent blackening. Since heat is shut off, the life of the serpentine lamp is prolonged.
