PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drum washing machine allowing smooth starting of dehydration operation. SOLUTION: A rotary drum 1 having a rotation center axis approximately horizontal or inclined is rotatably stored in a water tub 3. A control means (not shown in the figure) is provided for controlling a motor 5 which rotates and drives the rotary drum 1. In dehydration operation, when the rotary drum 1 is transferred from an approximately stand-still state to first predetermined rotation speed for judging balance of cloth, the control means senses an amount of laundry (not shown in the figure) in the rotary drum 1. If it is judged that the balance of cloth is good in the first predetermined rotation speed, a judged value at the time of the balance of cloth judging is compensated corresponding to a detected laundry amount when the rotary drum 1 is controlled to be rotated at rotation speed of dehydration. Thereby, special operation for sensing the amount of laundry is not required, and smooth dehydration operation is performed corresponding to the amount of laundry. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
