PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple control logic that is easy to obtain focusing accuracy, and to realize them in a small size and at a low cost. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus includes: an imager 6 for converting a subject image, formed by imaging optical systems 1 and 1a, into an electrical signal; a signal processing means 11 for generating an image signal from the electrical signal obtained by the imager 6; a light quantity adjusting means 2 for controlling a quantity of incident light during photographing by the photographic optical system; a focus detecting means 3 capable of being inserted into or retracted from the optical path of the photographic optical system; and a focus calculating means 9 capable of calculating an amount of defocus from the calculation result of the signal processing means 11. Only when the light quantity adjusting means 2 is in a specific position, the focus detecting means 3 is inserted in the optical path and the focus calculating means 9 is operated.
