A device for determining the size of heaps of confectionery material on a moving conveyor comprises an extended light source above the conveyor and at right angles to its direction of motion, and a camera opposite the light at the same height above the conveyor and arranged to pick up light reflected by the conveyor and/or the material. A device for determining the size of heap(s) of confectionery material (40) on a moving conveyor (10) comprises an extended light source (20) at an angle alpha to the conveyor (10) and essentially at right angles to the direction of motion (M) of (10), emitting light which can be focussed on a linear zone approximately at right angles to M, and a camera (30) opposite the light (20) at the same angle (alpha ) to the conveyor (10) and arranged so as to pick up the light (31) reflected by the conveyor (10) and/or by the material (40) thereon. An independent claim is also included for a method for the production of confectionery by using a device as described above.
