<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device wherein a red display color having satisfactory visibility can be obtained. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal display element 1 wherein a TN type liquid crystal 10 is encapsulated between two transparent substrates 2 and 3 on which alignment layers 6 and 7 are formed, respectively, first and second polarizing plates 11 and 12 disposed on outer side surfaces of the two transparent substrates 2 and 3, respectively and a backlight 13, the liquid crystal display element 1 has 0.3 to 0.5 μm or 1.0 to 3.0 μm retardation value (Δn×d) and either one of the first and the second polarizing plates 11 and 12 is a red color system color polarizing plate having ≤1% transmittance when the polarizing plates are orthogonally disposed in 440 nm and 550 nm wavelength of incident light and ≥60% transmittance when the polarizing plates are orthogonally disposed in 650 nm wavelength of the incident light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
