A flush syringe assembly (20) comprises a barrel (21) including a cylindrical side wall (22) having an inside surface (23) defining a chamber (25) for retaining fluid, an open proximal end (27) and a distal end (28) having a passageway therethrough in fluid communication with the chamber (25) . A plunger (37) including an elongate body portion (38) having a stopper (41) at its distal end (40) is provided. The stopper (41) is slidably positioned in fluid-tight engagement with the inside surface (23) of the barrel (21) for driving fluid out of the chamber (25) through the passageway. The stopper (41) includes a distal portion (62) and a proximal portion (61) separated by a spring element (63) and configured to compress when fluid is being driven through the passageway by motion of the plunger (37) and to continue to drive fluid through the passageway after motion of the plunger (37) has stopped.
