The method of operation of a separately ignited internal combustion engine has direct cylinder fuel injection controlled as to mixture. Exhaust gas is introduced into the cylinder to form a fuel base mixture with high exhaust gas content. Shortly before the ignition point, adjacent to the spark plug, a limited mixture of fuel and an oxygen bearing fresh gas stream is injected. At low speeds and loads a lean base mixture is formed and a richer mixture is produced at high speeds.
