<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and inexpensively producing a high purity mucopolysaccharide (e.g. chondroitin sulfate) with an averaged particle diameter in the range of 0.5-10 μm which is useful as a raw material of medicines, cosmetics or the like. <P>SOLUTION: This method for producing a mucopolysaccharide powder whose averaged particle diameter is in the range of 0.5-10 μm is obtained by the following steps. An aqueous solution comprising a mucopolysaccharide and an organic carboxylate (particularly preferably sodium acetate) is prepared where the concentration of the organic carboxylate is 0.3-2 mass% (preferably 0.5-1 mass%). The concentration of the mucopolysaccharide is preferably 0.1-20 pts.mass to 100 pts.mass water. Then the aqueous solution is mixed with a water-soluble organic solvent (particularly preferably ethanol) under agitation at ≥1 m/s shear rate to precipitate the mucopolysaccharide. At this time, the water-soluble organic solvent is generally used in an amount equivalent to 20-80 mass% to 100 mass% total of the water-soluble organic solvent and water.
