<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the activity of a catalyst 3 from being lowered by the solid solution of a catalyst metal into a support material formed of an oxide. <P>SOLUTION: A time for which the catalyst 3 is exposed to exhaust gases with a lean air-fuel ratio at a prescribed temperature or higher is cumulated as a high temperature lean time.
