PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of basic load control of a Brayton cycle engine, by supplying proper compressed air or an air-fuel mixture without a loss, without squeezing fresh air of high pressure, by controlling the combustion chamber volume in the piston top dead center in response to a load. SOLUTION: This Brayton cycle engine has a piston 322 reciprocating in a cylinder 323, a supercharging means 2 arranged in an intake system and supplying air of higher pressure than atmospheric pressure, an intake valve 212 arranged in the cylinder 323, opening and closing when the piston 322 exists in the vicinity of the top dead center and adjusting a supply quantity of the air supplied from the supercharging means 2 to the cylinder 323, an operation state detecting means 50 for detecting an engine operation state, and a top dead center position changing means 30 for changing a top dead center position of the piston 322 on the basis of the detected engine operation state.
