Along the track for the sliding door (10) runs a cord (16) in wire or plastic. It includes fine and coarse tensioning adjustment units (34, 36). The roller arrangement (40) on the door includes two or more pulleys (52, 54, 56) which deflect the path of the cord, between two positions spaced along its length. When the door is slid, this arrangement, combined with adjusted tension in the cord, produces a controlled braking effect.
