PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To access to a distributed file system (DFS) using a conventional protocol such as an NFS or CIFS without change on a client side. SOLUTION: A DFS server 2 is provided with a gateway section 25 for receiving the conventional protocol and applies processing corresponding to it to the DFS. The gateway section 25 emulates the directory structure existing in the file system such as the NFS or CIFS. When the DFS is a recordable file system, the update processing is converted into a new generation's creation processing, and reference processing is converted into the access to the newest generation of a file group managed every generation.
