In the event of a faulty filling state signal, the fuel consumption is calculated from at least one operating value (mK) of the engine (10). The calculated fuel consumption (50) is compared with at least one threshold value and is then recalculated for comparison with a second threshold value, on reaching which the dosing takes place. A suitable engine is also described.
