A cage for cylindrical rollers in a roller bearing is made from a flat rectangular sheet-metal strip (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), having a longitudinallyorientated groove (3) and transverse slots (5) formed therein to define a plurality of bars (7) such that each of them has a central portion (4) extending between thicker end-portions (2), the width of each slot at its centre being smaller than the diameter of each roller (8), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), while the ends of each slot have a width greater than said diameter. The bars are bent or cranked to offset the portions (4) from the centres of the rollers and thereafter the strip (1) is bent to form a complete ring with said portions situated externally thereof, the abutting ends of the strip being joined by e.g. welding. Subsequently the rollers are pressed into the slots and retained therein by the portions (2, 4) of the bars. The radial thickness of the portions (2, 4) may be approximately one half and one quarter of the diameter of each roller, respectively, the overall radial thickness (X) of the ring after the portions (4) have been bent as aforesaid being approximately three-quarters of said diameter. Alternatively, the ring comprises two strips that are made in the aforementioned manner and bent to form two semicircular halves of the ring, the abutting ends being joined by welding.</p> |
