A media client (200) for a networked communication device includes a user agent (202) to communicate with a multimedia application in the networked communication device. The user agent (202) provides a high-level application interface to the multimedia application (150). A signaling agent (204) under the control of the user agent (202) performs signaling operations necessary to establish and maintain communication sessions. A media agent (206) under the control of the user agent (202) performs media operations. The media client (200) may be located in a network and remotely accessed by the multimedia application (150). The user agent (202), signaling agent (204) and media agent (206) have network interfaces (208, 210, 212) that allow these elements to be distributed within the network and accessed remotely.
