Playback devices often display a menu listing of the files contained on a data carrier like CD-ROM or flash memory medium. To obtain this information, the device usually scans through the whole medium. An improved method for scanning the contents of a storage medium comprises the steps of determining at least the type of medium and type of file system on the medium, retrieving from said storage medium structural information indicating the structure and/or type of data items stored on the medium, determining the amount of buffer space available for buffering the retrieved information, combining the retrieved and the determined values using predefined rules to determine a scanning type value, selecting, depending on the determined scanning type value, one of a plurality of scanning methods for scanning the storage medium, wherein at least a first scanning method comprises scanning only a part of the storage medium, and scanning the storage medium according to the selected scanning method.
