A fuel cap (10) has an upper housing (18) and a lower housing (20), each configured to be inserted into the filler neck (12) of a vehicle fuel system . The upper housing and lower housing are cooperatively configured to allow bo th rotational and axial relative movement with respect to one another. A seal (16) coupled to the lower housing (20) sealingly engages the filler neck (12 ) when the fuel cap (10) is in a tightened position. A spring mount (22) is coupled to the lower housing (20) and engages an ejector spring (24) that is positioned to bias the lower housing (20) axially toward the upper housing (18) to assist in loosening contact of the seal (16) and filler neck (12) during removal of the fuel cap (10).
