The engine has a piston (14) with a combustion bowl (28) having a lateral annular groove (46), and a horizontal base (48) of constant depth from which a central boss (50) extends vertically. An axis (B-B) of the boss passing through the top (S) of the boss is inclined with respect to a vertical axis (X-X) at an acute angle to orient the top of the boss in the direction of a fuel injector (36).
