<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the whole system compact and simple, to effectively prevent the damage of an electrolyte membrane-electrode assembly, and to enhance heat efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: A fuel cell system 10 has a load applying mechanism 21 for applying a fastening load to a fuel cell stack 12. The load applying mechanism 21 has first and second fastening parts 112a, 112b capable of applying the different loads in the stacking direction to the desired portions of the fuel cell stack 12.
