<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus capable of restricting wasteful consumption of transfer materials on which toner patches are formed for detecting image formation characteristics, and to provide its control method. <P>SOLUTION: A toner patch formed on the first transfer material is set to a first toner patch corresponding to the minimum size of the transfer material on which the color image forming apparatus can perform image formation, and thus a visible image is formed (S13). The size of the transfer material on which the visible image of the first toner patch thus formed is transferred is detected in the direction of its conveyance (S14). Based on the detected size in the direction of conveyance, a second toner patch formed on the following transfer material is determined (S18, S21, and S24).
