<p>A monofilament twine is formed by surrounding a continuous bundle of substantially parallel, oriented synthetic monofilaments (20), Fig. 2 (not shown) with a thin synthetic binder (22) in band form so as to leave some of the monofilaments with which it comes in contact, being applied hot enough to fuse with the monofilaments with which it comes in contact. In Fig. 2 the binder (22) is applied in a helical manner. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the binder is in the form of a plurality of spaced apart annular bands 36. When polypropylene is used the fusing temperature should be about 350 DEG F to 625 DEG F; when polyethylene is used the temperature range should be about 400 DEG F to 625 DEG F. Stabilizers or pigments may be added to the polyolefins that form the monofilaments to protect them against ultra violet degradation.</p> |
