PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber for improving ride comfort on a vehicle. SOLUTION: The shock absorber comprises: a first cylinder 2; a second cylinder 5 inserted into the first cylinder 2; a motion converting mechanism H mounted between the first cylinder 2 and the second cylinder 5 for converting relative motion between the first cylinder 2 and the second cylinder 5 into rotating motion; and a motor 1 fixed to either one of the first cylinder 2 or the second cylinder 5 to which the rotating motion is transmitted. It controls relative movement between the first cylinder 2 and the second cylinder 5 with the output torque of the motor 1.
