PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely control concentration of Nox and amount of particulate matter in exhaust gas by minimizing the number and size of matrices in required correction mapping. SOLUTION: In this control method for the internal combustion engine for measuring amount peculiar to exhaust gas containing at least concentration of Nox and richness R of exhaust gas, deciding differenceΔNox,ΔR between measured values Nox<SB>mes</SB>, R<SB>mes</SB>of the amount and nominal values Nox<SB>nom</SB>, R<SB>nom</SB>, and preparing a correction instruction for correcting a control parameter Xi of the engine to reduce the difference from the difference and a correction table fixed in advance during operation of the engine, dominant parameters X1, X2 having the limited number are decided from among the parameters Xi in each operation region to correct only the dominant parameters by correction values C<SB>X1</SB>, C<SB>X2</SB>decided in advance and obtained by using a map stored in a computer 2.
