PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and an electrolyte for producing hydrogen by electrolysis. SOLUTION: The electrolyte composition contains water; at least one ionizing compound and at least one chelating solvent. Also disclosed herein is an electrolyzer system (10) comprising an electrolyte comprising water, at least one ionizing compound, and at least one chelating solvent. The electrolyte system further comprises a cathode (12) and an anode (14) disposed in the electrolyte, wherein the anode (14) is in electrical contact with the cathode (12).
