PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool which has an oxide film excellent in abrasion resistance and toughness. SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool consists of a substrate and the film formed on the substrate. The film includes a first film formed of titanium boronitride, and a second film formed of at least one selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, hafnium oxide, and a solid solution containing two or more of these oxides as main composition. The first film is arranged between the substrate and the second film, and located immediately below the second film, and the second film has compressive stress at least at a location relating to cutting.
