The method involves thermally molding a steel tube in a press mold (6) at a temperature of about 910-940 degree Celsius. Rim holes (3) with flanges are formed in the tube by punching dies (7) provided in the mold during thermal molding of the tube, where the dies are provided in the form of spikes. The flanges are inverted into an inner space of the tube. The tube is hardened in the press mold through fast cooling. An independent claim is also included for a body assembly for a motor vehicle.
