Producing 3-pentenonitrile comprises isomerizing a 2-methyl-3-butenonitrile feed stream in the presence of a dissolved or dispersed catalyst, distilling the product stream to separate an overhead stream (2) from a catalyst-containing bottoms stream, distilling stream (2) to obtain an overhead stream enriched in (Z)-2-methyl-2-butenonitrile and a bottoms stream (5), and distilling stream (5) to produce a bottoms stream containing 3-pentenonitrile and an overhead stream containing 2-methyl-3-butenonitrile.
