摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus in which a low cost, a large number of pixels, a high definition image, and a high contrast ratio are achieved. <P>SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes at least a light source, a polarized beam splitter, an optical deflection element, a reflection type space light modulation element and a projection lens. The polarized beam splitter to which linearly polarized light from the light source is made incident is disposed in the direction of the vibration of the electric field of the linearly polarized beam so as to be parallel to the polarized-beam splitting function face of the polarized beam splitter. In addition, the reflection type space light modulation element is disposed in the direction of the vibration of the electric field of the linearly polarized beam so as not to coincide with the horizontal and vertical directions of the the side of a square pixel of the reflection type space light modulation element.
