PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress dimensional change by swelling of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane, in a solid polymer electrolyte membrane-electrode joining body using an aromatic hydrocarbon-based electrolyte membrane or a fuel cell using it. SOLUTION: In this solid polymer electrolyte membrane-electrode joining body integrated by jointing the aromatic hydrocarbon-based electrolyte membrane to an electrode catalyst layer, a surface of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 1 without jointing the electrode catalyst layer thereto is covered with an adhesive layer of a polymer membrane 7 formed of a material having excellent adhesiveness to the solid polymer electrolyte membrane and hardly absorbing moisture. By superposing the electrode catalyst layer 2 and the polymer membrane 7 on each other, moisture is prevented from leaking from a space between contact surfaces of both of them. A non-sulfonated substance of an aromatic hydrocarbon-based electrolyte is used for the polymer membrane 7. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
