[Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A valve for use as an odour seal in a waste pipe has a housing 15, Fig. 1, an outlet 16, and a diaphragm 21 normally pressed by a weight 22 against the outlet and arranged to be lifted when the pressure of the liquid surrounding the outlet exceeds a predetermined value. The housing 15 is connected by a pipe 18 with the sludge trap 11 of a wash stand 10 and has a cover 19 with a small hole 23 and a larger hole 24 closed by a rubber disc 25 so that the diaphragm 21 may open more quickly than it closes. In a modification, the sludge trap is dispensed with and the supper edge of the outlet provided with a small notch whereby water surrounding the outlet may form a seal without normally contacting the underside of the diaphragm. In Fig. 3, a diaphragm 44 loaded by a weight 45 controls an outlet 33 in a bath waste pipe 36 and is carried by a cover 41 provided with a vent 47, 48. A floor drain 31 forms a cover to a bowl 30 containing a rubber valve 51 which engages concentric ribs 52, 53, 54 preventing further inflow from the drain if the level in the bowl becomes excessive, the rib 52 being engaged first and the vent 47 being closed by a stud 46 on the diaphragm to avoid the risk of water entering the space between the diaphragm and its cover. The vents 47, 48 may be replaced by a vent in the stud 46.</p> |
