PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coil element selecting method which enables the coil element selection and the coil element combination most suitable for MRI photographing to be visually, simply and certainly executed, and a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The coil element selecting method includes a low-resolution image capturing step to execute the image capturing by the low-resolution image capturing using two or more coil elements A-H, an image capturing coil element selecting step to select the coil element which makes an object region of the image capturing most appropriate from the low-resolution image captured in the low-resolution image capturing step and a coil element extracting step to extract the coil element selected in the image capturing coil element selecting step, wherein the low-resolution image of a subject is captured beforehand and the coil element selection is visually executed using the low-resolution image.
