In the treatment of a melt or slag (1) in a vessel (2) by injection of a treatment agent (4) using an injection lance (3), the lance is automatically readjusted in dependence on its chronological wear so that it is located at a constant immersion depth in the melt or slag. An independent claim is included for corresponding apparatus, comprising the vessel, the lance and a device (5) for displacing the lance, also having a device (6) for determining the chronological wear of the lance during the treatment and a control device (8) for the lance displacement device, such that lance is automatically readjusted in dependence on its chronological wear during the treatment and the lance is located at a constant immersion depth in the melt or slag.
