There are provided a production process for polymers whereby hydroxyl groups can be introduced in a short time without leaving organic volatile components or ash in the polymers, as well as polymers obtained by the production process. A polymer with a substituent is contacted with high temperature, high pressure water to replace the substituent with a hydroxyl group.
