<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer composition that exhibits a lower stiffness relative to known polymer compositions comprising ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, as well as a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The polymer composition comprises (a) a matrix of cross-linked polyethylene molecules, the matrix having a free volume, and (b) at least one non-polar biocompatible lipid selected from the group consisting of squalane, a fatty acid, a glyceride, a polyisoprenoid, cholesterol, a cholesterol ester, and mixtures thereof, wherein the at least one non-polar biocompatible lipid fills at least a portion of the free volume of the matrix.
