PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element and a display device that do not require a thin-film forming process, a vacuum system or a carrier multiplying layer, provide satisfactory light-emitting efficiency, and involve relatively low power consumption when used for producing a large-screen display. SOLUTION: The light emitting element (1) includes a gas layer (100), a dielectric layer (10), a porous emitter layer (2), a pair of electrodes made up of an A electrode (6) and a B electrode (7), and a C electrode (17). The porous emitter layer (2) is disposed in contact with the dielectric layer (10), the gas layer (100) is disposed in contact with the porous emitter layer (2), the pair of electrodes made up of the A electrode (6) and the B electrode (7) are disposed such that an electric field is applied to at least part of the dielectric layer (10), and the C electrode (17) is disposed in contact with the dielectric layer (10) so that an electric field is applied to the dielectric layer (10). When a voltage between the A electrode (6) and the B electrode (7) reaches the breakdown voltage for the gas, primary electrons are generated and injected to the emitter layer, and this causes creeping discharge (electron avalanche) resulting in light emission. At this time, the intensity of light emission of the emitter layer is adjusted by applying a voltage to the C electrode. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
