PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct-acting one-way clutch with a large load capacity capable of locking a reciprocable rod in one direction as necessary. SOLUTION: Two retainers 8 and 9 with different diameters are assembled between the inner peripheral surface of an outer ring 1 and the cylindrical outer peripheral surface 6a of a rod 6 to form a large number of pockets 10 and 11 radially facing each other in the retainers 8 and 9, and then sprags 12 are assembled in the pockets 10 and 11. The pressing force of an elastic member 15 is provided to the small diameter side retainer 9 to energize the small diameter retainer 9 in one axial direction. The clutch also comprises a moving means 20 to move the small diameter retainer 9 against the elasticity of an elastic member 15. The small diameter retainer 9 is formed reciprocatingly movable by the moving means 20 and the pressing force of the elastic member 15, the sprags 12 are derricked by the axial movement of the small diameter retainer 9 to swing them in a fall direction, and the sprags 12 are engaged with the inner peripheral surface of the outer ring 1 and the cylindrical outer peripheral surface 6a of the rod 6 to lock the rod 6 in one direction.
