PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide specific spatial resolution over the large depth of field (DOF), without being influenced by a surface type of a medium. SOLUTION: This invention is a printer 30 including an optical encoder 11 for accurately expressing the actual movement of paper in both the X direction and the Y direction. The optical encoder 11 uses a coherent illumination source or a quasi-coherent illumination source.
