<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Sialon insert which can reduce wear caused by chemical reaction between a workpiece material and a tool cutting edge and abrasive mechanical wear without degrading the strength of a cutting tool substrate, to thereby improve the service live of the tool. <P>SOLUTION: According to the chemical composition of the Sialon insert, a grain boundary phase in a sintered body ranges from 5 to 20%, and an α ratio indicative of the ratio of α Sialon in Sialon grain is set to 40% or less. Then a Z value of β Sialon represented by Si<SB>6-Z</SB>Al<SB>Z</SB>O<SB>Z</SB>N<SB>8-Z</SB>is in the range of 0.2 to 1.0. Further a solid solution ratio A of Al represented by a value (actually measured Z value of β Sialon)/(theoretical Z value calculated from a sintered body composition) of the sintered body is set to 70% or more.
