PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a torque limiter in which torque exceeding a specified value can be constrained while avoiding surge torque generation. SOLUTION: The torque limiter is provided with a friction plate 3 intervening between an input shaft 1 and an output shaft 2 to transmit the torque by friction, a depressing portion 4 for depressing the friction plate 3 to exert a friction force capable of transmitting torque to the friction plate 3, springs 51, 52 for applying spring force for depressing the friction plate 3 to the depressing portion 4, and a torque converting mechanism 6 for sensing an excessive torque transmitted from the input shaft 1 to the output shaft 2 to convert the excessive torque into a mechanical displacement in a direction to be able to oppose the spring force. The torque converting mechanism 6 that has sensed the torque exceeding the specified value reduces the friction force in the friction plate 3 through bringing about the mechanical displacement to generate a slip and thereby constrains the torque transmitted. Consequently, the output shaft 2 doesn't abruptly decelerate and hence the surge torque generation can be avoided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
