A thermoplastic hydroxyethyl hydroxypropyl cellulose which is less soluble in hot water than in cold water or polar organic solvents has a hydroxyethyl M.S. of 0.05-1.0 and a hydroxypropyl M.S. of at least 2. The compound may be prepared by mixing cellulosic material, alkali and a water-miscible inert organic diluent, the alkali/cellulose ratio being 0.02-0.5 and the water/cellulose ratio being 0.1-4, and then reacting the resulting alkali cellulose with a hydroxy-ethylating agent and a hydroxy-propylating agent, using an alkali/cellulose ratio of 0.02-0.5 and a water/cellulose ratio of 0.1-2, until the required M.S. values are obtained.
|
