An anisotropic alloy composition is formed by unidirectionally solidifying a melt of a monotectic composition, the composition being such that one of the products of solidification forms as filaments embedded in a second product of solidification. Exemplified compositions are Sn-S, Cu-S, Ag-S, In-S and Tl-S. Impurities may be deliberately incorporated in the melt to impart specific properties to the matrix or filaments. The filaments may be removed to produce a body of uniaxial porosity by reheating the solidified body to a temperature intermediate the melting points of the matrix and filament compositions and applying a pressure differential sufficient to eject the molten filament material. Alternatively, the filament material may be evaporated under vacuum or dissolved. The matrix may also be dissolved from the solidified body and the filaments utilized.ALSO:An anisotropic alloy composition is formed by unidirectionally solidifying a melt of a monotectic composition, the composition being such that one of the products of solidification forms as filaments embedded in a second product solidification.
