PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high brightness and high efficiency of a flat face discharge light source in which a plasma igniter utilizing an electronic emitter, corona discharge, and dielectric barrier discharge or the like is mounted. SOLUTION: The flat face light source has a sealed container 1 having a flat discharge space 80 having translucency, a discharge gas encapsulated into the sealed container 1, at least one pair of discharge electrodes 40 and 41 which are installed in the sealed container 1 and covered by an insulating layer, and the plasma igniter 70 constituted of an electrode covered by the insulating layer.
