PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder injection type spark ignition engine capable of securely holding air-fuel mixture in fast idle at the time of lean combustion and start of the engine in a cold condition, provided with a piston for enabling stratified combustion and ignition time retard. SOLUTION: This spark ignition engine is constituted in such a way that its upper face shape is square, a cavity is formed offset onto an intake valve side by crossing a ridge line, and a tip discharging part of a plug 2 is buried into the cavity at a top dead center position of the piston 1. The cavity is provided offset onto an intake side of the piston 1, the width of the cavity is 30 to 50% of bore diameter, and distance between an end part on an exhaust side of the cavity and an ignition plug 2 is 10 mm or less.
