<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communication apparatus having a plurality of channels which can efficiently suppress power consumption by setting optimum light intensity with a simple configuration, and an optical communication method. <P>SOLUTION: An optical communication control unit 22 of a master transmits predetermined pattern signals to each slave at a plurality of kinds of light intensity. An optical communication control unit 22 of each slave determines whether or not a predetermined pattern signal transmitted from the master is normally recognized, and notifies the master of light intensity commonly receivable between respective PDs of the slave.
