Stream of exhaust gas in a fuel cell system (10) is monitored for carbide concentrations and a preset reaction is activated if the carbide concentrations in the stream of exhaust gas meets preset conditions. Carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide concentrations are measured in a return route (20) for anode residue gas. Independent claims are also included for: (a) A device for monitoring a fuel cell system with membrane fuel cells; (b) and for a fuel cell system.
